Day 1
Our day begins bright and early, at approximately 7:00 a.m. you will
be picked up from various locations in Winnipeg including hotels, hostels
or place of residence. The first of many stops along the journey is at
Spirit
Sands Provincial Park located south of Carberry. We take time to explore
the area and walk up the sand dunes before moving on to Riding
Mountain National Park. Free time will be given all afternoon to explore
Wasagaming and Clear Lake. Optional activities here include horseback riding,
mountain biking, shopping, swimming and hiking. We will retire for the
evening at Lake Katherine’s Anishinabe Village. You can expect some traditional
native cuisine and story telling from an elder before retiring in a cozy
6 person tipi.
Day 2
Another early morning finds us packing up camp and heading to Lake
Audy where we enjoy a continental breakfast amongst a heard of bison. We
stop next for lunch at a look-out tower on route to Flin
Flon. This city is well known as a mining town, but is quite unique
as it is built entirely on rocks. While in town, we stop at a local grocery
store to gather goodies for the next few days of travelling. Hold on to
your hat for what is coming next, as we drive down a bumpy logging
road for 18 miles. We reach the shores of Lake
Kisseynew after a ½ mile treck through the bush with all our
provisions for the night. The boat ride to the cabin allows us to explore
the unique character of this region, as we drive through several small
channels along the way to a secluded island.
Day 3
After a hardy breakfast, we head back to civilization. If time permits,
we may take a tour of the mine and underground greenhouse in Flin Flon
before making our way to Thompson. At 6:00 p.m we embark on the second
leg of the journey which begins with a 12 hr overnight train ride to Churchill.
Churchill is one of Manitoba’s most northern communities, accessible only
by plane or train it is also well known as the “polar bear capital of the
world”.
Day 4
Arrival in Churchill 6:00 am. Once settled in at our base camp, a research
station at a scenic spot along the Hudson bay, we take time to explore
and familiarize ourselves with the surrounding area. Activities planned
for today include a guided tour of the Prince
of Wales Fort, and a guided Beluga Whale site seeing tour on the Sea
North II. Belugas are the most vocal of all whales and you will
hear them through stereo hydrophones. Expect to see a variety of bird species,
seals and maybe even a polar bear or two!!
Day 5
Free time for all those wishing to finally sleep in! After lunch, we
take part on a guided walking tour
of ancient Unuit grounds where objects have been found dating 3500
years. Our guide, equipped with a firearm, is well versed with the surrounding
landscape and wildlife and is sure to find an answer to any questions which
may arise. Churchill is known as a photographer’s paradise; 200 species
of migratory birds gather in and around Churchill. The area around Churchill
is also host to a brilliant display of tundra flowers during the summer
months.
Day 6
This day is spent exploring the town of Churchill and surrounding area.
Optional activities include seeing the Esquimo Museum, exploring
a shipwreck, guided walking tours, heli-tours, snorkeling ... At 10:00pm
we are back on the train for 12 hours back to Thompson.
Day 7
Today is our last day on tour. We will be stopping at Pisew Falls (largest
accessible waterfalls in Manitoba) for a stretch and a bite to eat along
the drive back to Winnipeg.
Take a look at our Route Map.
